The Caledonian Society of Kenya

Fàilte, karibu, welcome!

Welcome to the Caledonian Society of Kenya. Founded in 1904, our society celebrates and promotes Scottish heritage, culture, and traditions here in Kenya. We are a vibrant community that brings together Scots, descendants of Scots, and friends of Scotland who share a passion for Scotland’s rich history, music, dance, and customs. Whether you are a long-standing member or a visitor, we warmly invite you to explore our events, join our gatherings, and immerse yourself in the unique blend of Scottish and Kenyan cultures that we cherish.

We host two major events throughout the year that celebrate Scottish culture and traditions. In November, we celebrate St. Andrew’s Night, a formal ball featuring a live band from Scotland, offering an authentic and lively Scottish experience. Every January, we celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns with a traditional Burns Supper, a formal evening filled with poetry, traditional Scottish cuisine, and vibrant entertainment.

Additionally, we host whisky tasting sessions throughout the year, providing opportunities to sample and learn about a variety of fine single malts. For golf enthusiasts, we organise several golf events, allowing members to enjoy Kenya’s courses while connecting with fellow members. Stay tuned to our events calendar for dates and details on these and other exciting activities.

Burns Supper - January

Each January, we celebrate the life and works of our national bard, Robert Burns. The Burns Supper is a formal evening filled with poetry, a traditional Scottish food, light hearted speeches and mini ceilidh (dance).

Burns Night is an important cultural event in Scotland, with celebrations held by organisations, universities, and communities around the world. It is an opportunity to celebrate Scotland's rich literary heritage and the enduring legacy of one of our most celebrated poets.

The centrepiece of a Burns Night celebration is the Burns supper, which typically includes a meal of haggis (a savoury pudding), neeps (mashed turnips), and tatties (mashed potatoes), accompanied by Scotch whisky. The evening also features recitations of Burns' poetry, such as the famous "Address to a Haggis". Speeches are also an important part of Burns Night celebrations, as they allow for lighthearted and good faith banter between the genders.

St Andrews Ball - November

The 30th of November is St Andrew's Day (Scotlands patron saint). We celebrate this day with a live ceilidh band (flown in from Scotland), traditional dancing, and fine Scottish cuisine. Tickets sell out fast so be sure to reserve your table once the the event is announced to avoid disappointment!

St. Andrew's Day is an important celebration in Scotland, marked by various festivities that showcase Scottish culture, heritage, and traditions, including the St. Andrew's Ball, a formal dance that has been a part of Scottish culture for centuries. The ball is a platform to teach traditional dances and music to younger generations, raise funds for charitable causes, and celebrate Scottish identity and traditions through lively music, group dances, and a shared sense of community.
